Academic research

Research is an integral part of many of Grenoble INP’s academic programs. At Grenoble Institute of Technology-affiliated labs, 27% of PhD students hold undergraduate engineering degrees from French universities; 46% hold graduate degrees.
The school awards more than 220 PhDs each year.

All high-level academic programs include a research component. More than 28% of PhD research projects also involve an industrial partner (through France’s national CIFRE program) or are funded in part by a company. The involvement of businesses in research promotes the dissemination of new knowledge outside the lab, gives PhD candidates valuable career experience, and increases the chances of successful future career placement and job satisfaction.

Academic programs with research components

A number of academic programs at Grenoble INP include research components:

The Research-oriented Master-s degree is awarded to students having completed one year of research in advanced science classes and during an internship where they are assigned a research topic.

PhD candidates must complete advanced coursework and research. The majority of a PhD candidate’s work is research (theoretical, applied, laboratory, literature review, etc.) and must explore an innovative issue and further the candidate’s knowledge. PhD students are enrolled in one of the Grenoble-Alps University’s doctoral schools. Graduates are prepared for careers in research and academia in the public and private sectors.

  • The PhD course curriculum is intended to broaden candidates’ horizons beyond their discipline and prepare them for their future careers. Special courses designed to raise candidates’ awareness of careers in science are also offered. Depending on the discipline and lab, these special courses can also include in-company placements or international mobility assignments of several weeks. For further information, please refer to the Grenoble-Alps University PhD handbook.
