Shanghai Global Ranking 2026

Since the Shanghai Ranking was first published in 2003, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has been consistently ranked among the institutions recognised by this internationally renowned ranking. This sustained presence reflects the enduring quality of its research, as well as the strength of Grenoble’s research and innovation ecosystem, developed in partnership with national research organisations and numerous academic, scientific and socio-economic partners.

Scientific excellence over the long term

In 2026, UGA ranks in the 151–200 range worldwide and 6th nationally, alongside Aix-Marseille University and the University of Montpellier. It is therefore among the eight highest-ranked French universities, reaffirming its position among France’s leading higher education and research institutions.

This international recognition reflects UGA’s long-standing commitment to research excellence across a wide range of fields, from physics and Earth and space sciences to life and health sciences, environmental sciences, engineering, the humanities and social sciences, mathematics and computer science.

The Shanghai Ranking

Established in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU – Academic Ranking of World Universities) assesses the research performance of higher education institutions. It ranks the world’s 1,000 best universities based on six weighted criteria:

• the number of alumni who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (10% of the overall score);
• the number of faculty members who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%);
• the number of highly cited researchers (20%);
• the number of articles published in Nature and Science (20%);
• the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%);
• the academic performance per capita, based on the five indicators above and calculated according to the number of full-time faculty members (10%).
