Grenoble INP – UGA supports a spintronics platform at CEA

Grenoble INP – UGA contributed to funding the SPIN-ANALYTICS platform, inaugurated at CEA Grenoble. Dedicated to electron spin resonance, this state-of-the-art facility strengthens France’s capabilities in spintronics and is open to the entire scientific community.

Grenoble INP – UGA contributed to funding the equipment for the SPIN-ANALYTICS platform, inaugurated at CEA Grenoble on 30 March 2026. Supported through an institutional equipment call for projects, Grenoble INP – UGA’s investment amounts to €150,000 out of an overall budget of more than €650,000, funded through several national schemes, including the SPIN and LUMA Priority Research Programmes and Infrastructures (PEPRs). This new facility builds on a long-standing collaboration between the SPINTEC* and SyMMES laboratories, both of which are jointly supervised by Grenoble INP – UGA.

Dedicated to electron spin resonance, the SPIN-ANALYTICS platform is equipped with a new generation of interoperable spectrometers, including two Bruker EMXplus instruments supplemented by a Rapid Scan module. These instruments enable researchers to study electron-spin dynamics with great precision in both magnetic quantum materials and photoactive systems. In particular, they can track rapid phenomena down to the microsecond timescale, providing access to mechanisms that were previously difficult to observe.
 

Exploring new materials for spintronics

These experimental capabilities are particularly valuable for studying emerging spintronic materials such as altermagnets, a recently identified class that has generated considerable scientific interest owing to its unusual magnetic properties and potential for very-high-frequency applications. The equipment can also analyse stacks of ultrathin layers and explore phenomena such as spin pumping and spin-to-charge conversion, which could be harnessed in future communication technologies.

The project aims to provide an infrastructure that is open to the entire scientific community. Integrated into national initiatives such as Infranalytics, the LUMA PEPR’s OPERANDO platform and the SPIN PEPR, SPIN-ANALYTICS is accessible to researchers in physics, chemistry and biology, both in Grenoble and throughout France.

Through this funding, Grenoble INP – UGA confirms its commitment to developing state-of-the-art scientific equipment and strengthening a renowned research ecosystem at the interface between fundamental science and technological innovation.
