Étienne Perret, Professor at Grenoble INP – Esisar, UGA and researcher at LCIS, has been named a 2026 IEEE Fellow. This distinction recognises his pioneering work on chipless communication and sensing technologies, paving the way for a new generation of radio-frequency technologies.
Grenoble INP – UGA is delighted to announce that Étienne Perret, Professor at LCIS* and a recognised specialist in innovative radio-frequency technologies, has been elevated to the prestigious rank of IEEE Fellow. One of the highest distinctions awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, this honour is conferred each year on no more than 0.1% of the organisation’s voting members. It recognises “his contributions to radar backscatter communication and sensing based on chipless radio-frequency identification technology.”
This international recognition crowns more than 15 years of research into ultra-low-power communication and chipless RFID tags. Étienne Perret has helped pioneer this emerging technology, which can be used to design printable, extremely low-cost tags and sensors that can be read remotely. These devices offer significant potential for the Internet of Things, traceability, authentication and material characterisation.
A recipient of an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2017, followed by an ERC Proof of Concept grant, and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), he has developed novel electromagnetic tags capable of storing information without embedded electronic components. His research has led to numerous industrial collaborations, several patent applications and more than 200 scientific publications, helping to establish Grenoble as a leading international center for next-generation RFID technology.
His elevation to the rank of Fellow also recognises his commitment to the international scientific community, particularly through organising conferences, supervising early-career researchers and helping to disseminate advances in radio engineering.
