Shanghai Ranking 2025: UGA among the world’s top 200 research universities

Consistently ranked among the world’s leading research universities since the Shanghai Ranking was first created 22 years ago, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is listed this year in the top 200 of the prestigious ranking, published on August 15, 2025.

At the national level, UGA ranks 6th among French universities and 2nd among regional universities, alongside Aix-Marseille and Montpellier, following Université Paris Saclay, PSL, Sorbonne Université, Paris Cité and Université de Strasbourg.

The leading European university in innovation for the number of patents filed over the past 20 years, Université Grenoble Alpes also stands out for the consistent excellence of its research at the highest international level, appearing every year among the best universities in the Shanghai Ranking since its creation in 2003. These strong results highlight the relevance and strength of UGA’s scientific strategy, developed in partnership with national research organizations, to foster research, innovation, and the international influence of the Grenoble ecosystem.

About the Shanghai Ranking

Created in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU, Academic Ranking of World Universities) evaluates higher education institutions’ commitment to research. It identifies the world’s top 1,000 universities according to six weighted criteria: number of alumni awarded Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (10% of the overall score); number of staff awarded Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20%); number of highly cited researchers (20%); number of articles published in Nature and Science (20%); number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%); and per capita academic performance, based on the five indicators divided by the number of full-time academic staff (10%).
