From Terrassa to Valence: The "Human Towers & Boules Unite!"

Led entirely by students and supported by the Unite! Seed Fund, this exchange successfully connected Catalan castells and French pétanque, leaving both communities eager to continue the adventure.

What started in the streets of Terrassa in spring 2025 has found its conclusion in France. The "Human Towers & Boules Unite!" project, one of the winning projects of the Unite! Seed Fund for Student Activities, has cwrapped up its second and final chapter. The event saw 54 members of the Colla Castellera Minyons de Terrassa (UPC – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) travel to Valence for an unforgettable weekend of sport, competition, and cross-border friendship.

A weekend at the heart of Valence’s student life

From 27 to 30 March 2026, the Catalan delegation travelled from Terrassa as guests of students from Grenoble INP – Esisar, UGA. Their visit coincided with the 36th Challenge de l'Étudiant, a high-eneregy inter-university ferstival bringing together schools across the city.

Thropughout the weekend, the Terrassa students joined mixed teams on the field, took part in competitions, and experienced the festive atmosphere of one of Valence’s most beloved student traditions.

A student-led project from start to finish

The exchange was organised entirely by students on both sides. At Grenoble INP – Esisar, UGA, the Bureau des Sports welcomed and integrated the 54 guests from Terrassa during a busy event weekend, working alongside the student associations AVE and the Cercle behind the Challenge de l’Étudiant.

On the UPC side, the Bergants del Campus Terrassa coordinated travel and logistics for the group. Supported by the Unite! Seed Fund, these students tams proved that they can handle complex international planning with success.

Closing the loop on a year of exchange

The project was built on a simple idea: to bring two student communities together through their own local cultural traditions: Catalan castells and French pétanque, and to let those traditions become a bridge.

In May 2025, around 30 Esisar students travelled to Terrassa, where they climbed into human towers alongside the Bergants del Campus Terrassa, met the mayor, attended public performances, and returned home with a new appreciation for Catalan culture and community. Ten months later, this return visit to France has cemented the bond..

Truly an incredible experience! wrote. Jade Belhoucine in response to the project wrap-up.

Both teams are already looking to the future, hoping to turn this into a recurring exchange and inviting other universities within the Unite! alliance to join the adventure.
