Grenoble Alpes University community ranks amongst the best universities in France
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British market research company that provides information for students and young professionals, recently published its World University Rankings. These rankings are based on 36 different subjects grouped under 5 major fields: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life sciences & Medicine, Natural sciences, Social sciences & Management. The results Grenoble INP and the Joseph Fourier University (UJF) are both ranked as the leading French institutions in materials sciences, alongside Ecole Polytechnique and Pierre et Marie Curie University (101-150 group). Grenoble INP is tied for second place with Polytechnique in electrical engineering and electronics whereas UJF was tied for 6th place (251-300 group). In mechanical engineering, aeronautics and manufacturing, Grenoble INP and UJF are respectively tied for 4th and 7th place (201-250 group). In terms of physics and astronomy, UJF ranks 5th and Grenoble INP is tied for 8th place (251-300 group). Finally, both institutions are tied for 6th place in digital sciences and information systems (301-400 group). UJF also ranks as the top French university in earth, environmental and marine sciences. It also placed highly in mathematics, chemistry and biology.
Criteria and methodology of the QS World University Rankings The institutions are ranked based on the quality of their research and reputation. The QS World University Rankings stands out from other international rankings on account of the priority given to peer assessment (40% of the final grade). Furthermore, five other criteria are selected for this ranking; reputation with employers (10%); student/lecturer ratio (20%); number of lecturer research publications (20%); percentage of foreign students and lecturers (10%). The 50 first institutions are ranked, the following are placed by groups (51 to 100, 101 to 150, 151 to 200, 201 to 250, 251 to 300, 301 to 400).
