Grenoble, high potential natural and technological risk management

Frédéric Dufour The Rhône-Alpes region in France has one of the highest concentrations of companies and organisations involved in the field of natural and technological risks. Research spanning many disciplines is carried out in various laboratories, some of which are co-coordinated by Grenoble INP. These laboratories are mainly organised around geosciences and include, for Grenoble INP, the Laboratory for the study of Transfers in Hydrology and Environment (LTHE) with regard to the risks of flooding and soil pollution and the Laboratory of Geophysical and Industrial Flows (LEGI) for the erosion of marine and river coasts. Engineering sciences are the focus of both the Laboratory for Soils, Solids, Structures and Risks (3SR) in relation to gravitational (rock falls, landslides, etc.), seismic and technological risks connected to sensitive structures, and the LEGI regarding atmospheric pollution and effluent treatment. Information sciences and technology and applied mathematics are also areas of focus with the GIPSA-lab for the analysis of measurements by innovative sensors and the Jean Kuntzmann laboratory (LJK) on data processing.
Some major research organisations have dedicated teams of experienced specialists on the Grenoble site. In addition, several close and fruitful relationships have been forged between the academic world and various industrial manufacturers such as EDF, GDF-SUEZ and the ARTELIA Group. Finally, it should be noted that Grenoble INP is a founding member of several risk-related research structures and federations (PARN, VOR, INDURA) with considerable involvement on the part of its professors.
