This is a highly competitive, two-year European Masters program offering training in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and the Web, Parallel, Distributed and Embedded Systems, Ubiquitous and Interactive Systems, Graphics, Vision and Robotics, Advanced Information Systems and Software Engineering.


Courses are jointly taught at the Ensimag school of Informatics, Applied Mathematics and Telecommunications of Grenoble INP, and the UFR IMAG (Informatics and Applied Mathematics) school of the University Joseph Fourier. Ensimag is a pioneer in the field of engineering science areas related to Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Informatics. The strong connection between Mathematics and Informatics leads to the teaching of high level engineers who are able to understand and master the complexity of the tasks and the evolution of the systems.

    The final semester is devoted to an individual Masters project conducted at a local public or corporate research laboratory, under the supervision of the academic supervisor. This may be a professional project or a scientific research project.
    A professional project requires an industry-grade design and implementation and is evaluated based on the professional quality of the design, specification, documentation and performance evaluation or acceptance tests.
    A scientific research project requires an original solution to a problem situated within an existing scientific domain. The project will be evaluated on the basis of mastery of the scientific state of the art, depth of analysis and understanding of the problem, originality of the proposed solution, and quality of the validation or experimental performance evaluation. Continuation for doctoral studies requires demonstration of aptitude for scientific research by completion of a scientific research project.

    Public domain research centers include INRIA, CNRS, European Synchrotron, Institut Laue Langevin and others.


    The local industrial community includes research and development facilities for such internationally prominent companies such as ST Microelectronics, Schneider Electric, Orange Labs, Xerox, CapGemini, Atos Sytems and HP.

The academic program is two year, European Standard, English language, Masters Program (120 ECTS) that combines three semesters of course and laboratory work (90 ECTS) with a six month individual research project (30 ECTS).

  • The initial semester (M1S1) is composed of 24 ECTS Units of foundational courseware taught in the English language, completed by 6 ECTS of language training.
  • The second semester (M1S2) combines core foundational courseware with optional specialization courses.
  • The third semester (M2S1) provides specialized training in one of five areas of specialization listed below.
  • The final semester is dedicated to an end of studies research project performed under the supervision of scientific research teams at affiliated research laboratories operated by local universities (INPG, UJF), public research centers (INRIA, CNRS, CEA) or local companies (France Telecom, Xerox, Sun, HP, ST Microelectronics and others).

Roughly half the students who complete the program are expected to continue for doctoral research.

During the first semester students, students will be assigned an academic supervisor on the basis area of academic interest. The academic supervisor will oversee both the selection of academic courseware and the masters research project. Courses for the second and third semesters should be selected in collaboration with the academic supervisor. The masters research project should normally be conducted within the research team of the academic supervisor.

Expected learning outcomes

The objective is to offer all students, regardless of country of origin, access to world-class graduate training in areas of informatics where the scientific research community in Grenoble is particularly strong. Graduates of this program are competent to define, formulate and direct scientific research and technology development in most advanced areas of ICT (Information and Communications Technologies).
