Every year, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy publishes an Academic Ranking of World Universities as well as rankings by broad areas of study. The consultancy's new global ranking covers the top 300 universities for each of seven engineering fields. Grenoble Institute of Technology and INSA Lyon were ranked in three fields, while the University of Paris X, the Ecoles des Ponts ParisTech and Central de Lyon were ranked in two.

In the field of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Grenoble Institute of Technology  was the top French university alongside UJF, UPMC, University of Bordeaux and University of Montpellier. The five universities were ranked in the 101 to 150 segment while the top three spots were awarded to Stanford, MIT and the University of California, Berkeley.

For the Materials Science & Engineering field, Grenoble Institute of Technology  was ranked alongside Aix-Marseille University, Ecole Polytechnique, Mines ParisTech and the University of Montpellier in the 101 to 150 segment. UPMC ranked 38, University of Paris Sud-Paris 11 ranked 41 and UJF ranked in the segment 76-100. This field was again led by MIT, Stanford and Berkeley.

In the field of Mechnical Engineering, Grenoble Institute of Technology was ranked in the 201-300 segment alongside Claude Bernard-Lyon, Ponts ParisTech, UJF, UTC, Bordeaux and Poitiers. Several French universities managed to rank higher in this field: Mines ParisTech (51–75); Paris Sud (76–100); Centrale Lyon, Centrale Paris, ENS Cachan, Ecole Polytechnique, INSA Lyon, UPMC and Montpellier (101–150); Aix-Marseille, Lille1 and Paris12 (151–200). This ranking was led by MIT, Stanford and Cambridge universities.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects analyzes the quality of university research based on eight criteria, including the number of publications, citations, co-authorship with international academics or industrial partners and the number of prizes awarded to an institution's researchers in the ranking's field of study.
