Grenoble Campuses Ranked Among Top 50 Most Innovative Universities in Europe

On June 14th, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Reuters, published its first Top 100: Europe's Most Innovative Universities ranking. Two universities in the Grenoble ecosystem were ranked among the top 50 most innovative European universities. The Grenoble Alpes University was ranked 35 and Grenoble Institute of Technology ranked 39.

A global impact on science, technology and the economy


This ranking was designed to identify which institutions contribute most to science and technology as well as the global economy. Reuter News created the ranking based on data for 170 institutions compiled by the Intellectual Property & Science division of Thomson Reuters and several of its research platforms. The ranking was established based on ten indicators that cover everything from the volume of scientific publications to the number of patents filed.


The top three spots were given to KU Leuven (Belgium), Imperial College London and University of Cambridge (Great Britain). Overall, Germany and Great Britain led the rankings with 24 and 17 universities in the top 100, respectively. France followed next with 16 ranked universities. In general terms, 60 of the 100 ranked institutions were located in Western Europe, while 24 were in Northern Europe, 15 in Southern Europe and one in Eastern Europe (Poland).

In France, 12 of the 16 ranked universities were part of the top 50 (#14 - UPMC; #15 - University of Paris Sud - Paris 11; #23 - University of Montpellier; #25 - University of Paris Descartes - Paris 5; #27 - University of Claude Bernard - Lyon 1; #28 - University of Strasbourg; #34 - University of Aix-Marseille; #35 - Grenoble Alpes University; #37 - University of Paris Diderot - Paris VII; #39 - Grenoble Institute of Technology; #43 - Ecole Polytechnique; #49 - University of Paul Sabatier - Toulouse III).
