Course Description

Cultivating the sensitivity, skills and understanding necessary to managing cultural differences is imperative to one's ability to function effectively and ethically in a diverse and global workplace, city, and world.
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to exploring intercultural issues and theory (ethnographic, sociological, psychological, historical and cultural). It aims to develop a deeper understanding of managing intercultural differences in general, with specific emphasis on the cultural differences between the French and the diverse cultures participating in this class. Students will study and analyze the impact of culture and identity in everyday life, and the ways in which culture interrelates with and affects communication processes.
We will examine the process of integration, the stages of cultural adjustment and the acquisition of intercultural sensitivity and skills. This course will look at broadly French life-styles, customs, values and culture, as well as, recent social trends in France. Finally, beyond understanding cultural differences, the focus of this course is equally on cultivating awareness of one's own cultural background and identity. Course conducted in English.
