Admission to Master’s and PhD engineering programmes
Admission to Master's and PhD engineering programmes
Admissions at an undergraduate level (i.e., after students obtain a secondary school degree) are carried out under the French national admissions system for university preparatory classes. Admissions to Grenoble INP's graduate engineering programmes are carried out through the following selective process:
75% of students are admitted following two years of undergraduate work and after passing the polytechnic entrance exam (which can be taken after completing university preparatory classes
10% of students are admitted immediately after secondary school into an integrated preparatory class in Grenoble, Toulouse, Nancy, or at ESISAR University in Valence
15% of students are admitted following two or three years of undergraduate work through the degree-based admissions process (2- or 3-year undergraduate degree, 2-year technical degree, Associate's degree plus technical preparatory courses, or a French maîtrise degree)
Bac = secondary school CPGE = French Grande Ecole preparatory class Prepa integree = Integrated preparatory class IUT, BTS = 2-year technical or Associate's degree Licence = Bachelor's degree Master = Master's degree Ecoles d'inge = Engineering schools
For students currently in:
Last year of secondary school
Preparatory classes
Polytechnic preparatory classes
2-year technical or undergraduate degree programme
Engineering school
Research-based Master's programme
Last year of secondary school Students in their last year of secondary school can apply for the first year of polytechnic preparatory classes or to ESISAR University (Ecole Supérieure d'Ingénieurs en Systèmes Industriels Avancés). They must obtain a science- or engineering-focused secondary school degree with good marks, and must go through an application process that includes an interview with an admission committee.
Preparatory classes Students in preparatory classes can apply for the first year of Grenoble INP's engineering degree programmes.* They must complete science- or engineering-focused university preparatory classes (based on the admission requirements for the desired Grenoble INP programme) and obtain good marks on the polytechnic entrance exam. *In the third year at ESISAR University
Polytechnic preparatory classes Students in polytechnic preparatory classes can apply for the first year of one of the 20 engineering schools* at Grenoble INP, Lorraine INP, or Toulouse INP. They must complete two years of polytechnic preparatory classes with good marks. *In the third year at ESISAR University
Technical or vocational undergraduate degree programme Associate's degree plus technical preparatory courses 2- or 3-year undergraduate degree programme Master's degree programme (formerly French maîtrise) Other technical graduate degree programme Students in these programmes should see the section on the degree-based admissions process.
Engineering school Students with an engineering degree can apply for a special year at one of the Grenoble INP's engineering schools* that offers a special year. Students can complete customised specialisation years either full-time or through a continuing education programme. Students with an engineering degree can also apply for a Research-based Master's programme if they wish to extend their thesis work; these students must have a Master's level degree that they wish to continue and they must be accepted into a research team. Students with an engineering degree can also obtain a Technological Research Degree or apply for a PhD programme if they have the equivalent of a Research-based Master's degree. *Except ESISAR University
Research-based Master's programme Students with a Research-based Master's degree who wish to obtain a PhD can apply to the Grenoble Doctoral College for Engineering Sciences. Their application will be assessed according to the quality of their Master's degree research and the available openings at the research labs.
Degree-based admissions You have earned a 2- or 3-year undergraduate degree, 2-year technical degree, Associate's degree plus technical preparatory courses, or a French maîtrise degree and would like to be admitted into the first or second year of the Master's programme...
