Supported by the Grenoble School of Architecture and the Grands Ateliers de l’Isle d'Abeau, Team Rhône-Alpes – together with Grenoble INP - Ense3, the GSCOP laboratory and Vesta-System – has just won the 2012 edition of the Solar Decathlon.

The Solar Decathlon is a biennial international competition for universities that rewards the creation of the best passive solar homes and positive energy homes based on ten criteria. Team Rhône-Alpes won the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 after being awarded first prize for architecture, innovation, comfort and prototype functioning, and second place for communication and industrialisation.Following two years of preparation and two weeks of tests, the victory is just reward for the CANOPEA prototype project. The house, which was built and developed in the Grands Ateliers de l'Isle d'Abeau, is a group of small, neighbourhood buildings known as Home-Towers that draws its inspiration from the uppermost reaches of the forest - the canopy - that captures 95% of solar energy and 30% of precipitation. The G-SCOP laboratory, which was also involved in the project, focused on developing an energy advice system using a digital representation of the CANOPEA building and data from a network of sensors to provide advice on energy management to the occupants of the house via an Android tablet. Team Rhône-Alpes was received on October 15 in the rooms of the French Ministry for Culture and Communication in the presence of Aurélie Filipetti, Minister for Culture and Communication; Cécile Duflot, Minister for Regional Equality and Housing; and Geneviève Fioraso, Minister for Higher Education and Research. The three ministers paid tribute to the high quality of the project and personally congratulated the participants and organising colleges.
