Shanghai Ranking 2019: Univ. Grenoble Alpes enters the top 150 global universities

After coming in the Top 50 in 6 disciplines in the rankings by academic subject, Univ. Grenoble Alpes goes one step beyond, entering the Shanghai Global Ranking’s Top 150 best world universities, published on 15 August, 2019.

Univ. Grenoble Alpes takes 4th place in the top French higher education institutions

Univ. Grenoble Alpes, which was already in the Top 200 of the renowned Shanghai Ranking in 2017 and 2018, has now joined the universities of Aix-Marseille, Strasbourg and Paris Diderot in the Top 150 for the quality of its research.

This significant advancement places Univ. Grenoble Alpes in 4th position of the top French higher education institutions, a position it shares with Aix-Marseille, Strasbourg and Université Paris Diderot. The University Paris Sud, Sorbonne University and the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris take the top 3 positions, and are in the Top 100 world universities. The Shanghai Ranking carefully evaluates the world’s institutions of higher education using several indicators of research performance. Among these indicators, the score for Univ. Grenoble Alpes’ highly cited scientists increased from 0 to 7.3, and that of alumni from 0 to 12.5. It is important to note that the number of highly cited scientists remains below the expectations for next year’s results, which will take into account the contributions of scientists from national research organizations. Concerning the alumni indicator, the score takes into account the Nobel Prize in Physics won by Gérard Mourou, a “Université Grenoble Alpes” graduate.

For Patrick Lévy, president of Université Grenoble Alpes and Principal Investigator of the Initiative of Excellence, “These results are very satisfactory, whatever the specificities and the limitations of the Shanghai Ranking. They are in keeping with the ongoing construction of a university site and the expansion of its international visibility, with the upcoming creation in January 2020 of the new Université Grenoble Alpes.”
