Admission

  • Who should apply? : Bac + 5
  • Available as :
    • Standard taught course

Entry requirements

For all admission applications, particular notice is taken of the availability of funding for the duration of the thesis.  In addition:

  • For holders of a Master Recherche, a grade of Assez-Bien is a minimum requirement
  • For holders of a 2nd Cycle Master qualification, admission to the thesis program is decided by the Ecole Doctorale after external examination of the End of Studies Project
  • For holders of a master's degree or equivalent qualification obtained abroad, admission is decided by the Collège Doctoral committee after external examination for doctoral students applying to Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) or by the Commission de Validation des Acquis Académiques for doctoral students applying to Université Joseph Fourier.
In certain cases, admission to the thesis program may be conditional.  Admission to the 2nd year of the thesis program is only given if the doctoral student can satisfy certain conditions: passing a certain number of exams and/or vivas at the end of the 1st year.
Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) allocates grants to enable visits of one or two months to its research laboratories, encouraging applications from students already holding a master's degree.

Apply now

Applications to the thesis program are generally made in October, however applications can be made at any time during the year.
An application requires the following:

  • A thesis subject
  • A thesis supervisor
  • A host laboratory
  • A Master Recherche or similar qualification.

Program

Courses

The Ecole Doctorale requires that students follow complementary courses of at least 120 hours during the preparation of a thesis, divided in the following manner:

- 40 hours minimum corresponding to specialist scientific training.  Each year, the Ecole Doctorale offers a body of scientific training, in total around 70 courses.  Certain courses are common to other qualifications (Masters, Engineering Schools) and 20 of these courses are organized specifically for doctoral students.  These courses require a minimum number of students.  Other courses can be organized in order to satisfy a particular individual need.  Such courses require the approval of Ecole Doctorale.
At least 8 hours of courses must be chosen from outwith the theme of the thesis.

- 40 hours minimum corresponding to non scientific training (courses organized by the Collèges Doctoraux of Université Joseph Fourier and Grenoble Institute of Technology). A minimum of 24 of these 40 hours must be devoted to professional career development.

List of specific courses offered by the Ecole Doctorale in 2008/2009:

  • RELIABILITY AND MAINTENANCE OF INDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS
  • DIELECTRICS FOR ELECTRICAL AND MICROELECTRONIC ENGINEERING
  • NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN MICROELECTRONICS, NOVEL DEVICES
  • FABRICATION OF NANOMATERIALS
  • LOW PRESSURE PLASMA
  • ULTIMATE INTEGRATION ON SILICON: NOVEL COMPONENTS
  • LIGHT MODULATION
  • OPTOMICROWAVE TECHNOLOGY
  • SUBMICRON INTERCONNECTS
  • FRACTALS AND WAVELETS
  • MOBILE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS: NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN ADVANCED INTELLIGENT RADIO INTERFACE
Courses Taught in English

This year, 4 courses are being given in English
  • LYAPUNOV METHODS IN ROBUST CONTROL
  • POWER MANAGEMENT CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS
  • THE MONTE CARLO APPROACH FOR THE SIMULATION OF CARRIER TRANSPORT IN DECANANOMETRIC DEVICES
  • ADVANCED DSP TECHNIQUES FOR WIRELESS MIMO SYSTEMS

Careers

Overview and Career Opportunities

Studies on the employment status of doctors have shown that former students of the Ecole Doctorale have great career success (less than 2% unemployed according to the last study).
Amongst them 16% are foreigners who have returned to their country after finishing the thesis to take up a University post.  For doctors working in France, they occupy positions in the private and public sector in equal measure, either in R&D positions or as researchers or lecturers in the fields covered by the Ecole Doctorale.
