Grenoble Institute of Technology has long worked to promote the profitable use of research. Since its establishment, the institute has had a long tradition of industrial partnerships. Cooperation takes various forms from one-off contract work to long-term joint research agreements. Some joint ventures have even turned into long-term "framework agreements» or even joint research-industry bodies, such as economic interest groups and shared laboratories.

Technology transfer is a frequently-used way of enabling companies to have a competitive edge in their markets, by transferring systems, processes or software patents or operating licenses. However, when a genuine technological breakthrough is made, the best strategy is a start-up or spin-off company.

Grenoble Institute of Technology has set up a "One-stop business promotion shop" (Guichet Unique de Valorisation or GUV) to support laboratories in developing industrial relationships, raise their awareness as to the value of their research and manage technology transfer in whatever guise.

For companies, the subsidiary INPG ENTREPRISE SA is a point of contact for accessing scientific and technical skills and resources in the laboratories, when launching R&D programs or innovative projects.
